Star of Morning began with a mood. Graham Kendrick remembers feeling a deep sense of unease during the Covid crisis; the uncertainty, the unknown, the quiet weight of something ominous pressing in. Yet he also recognised that this mood was not entirely new. Humanity has always faced moments of darkness, seasons of fear, and times of trial.
Into that backdrop came a recurring biblical image: the morning star. It’s the planet that shines when the night is still at its darkest, the first sign that the day is coming. It’s a picture of hope.
That image became the anchor for the song. Even in the thick of the unknown, there is a light that points forward, a promise that dawn will come. The lyrics carry that journey from sensing the ominous to lifting our eyes toward the hope found in the gospel and the future God has promised.
The song closes with a prayerful longing:
“Star of Morning, hurry the day,
when tears and sorrows vanish away.“
A song born in shadow, but fixed on hope.
