The song Sister continues Graham’s long tradition of taking a Bible story and drawing out its heart through music.
This one comes from a familiar scene in Luke’s Gospel when Jesus visits his good friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. As the disciples arrive, the house quickly turns into what Graham describes as a ‘catering crisis.’ Martha is busy preparing food in the kitchen, but Mary is nowhere to be seen. Sibling tension rises until Martha finally appeals to Jesus: “Lord, tell my sister to help me!”
Jesus’ response is both affirming and challenging. While he acknowledges Martha’s effort, he says words that echo through generations: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better.“
For Graham, these words feel particularly poignant in today’s frantic, information-overloaded world. We often find ourselves pulled in many directions, worried and distracted by endless tasks. Yet the invitation of Jesus remains the same: to pause, to sit at his feet, to soak in his presence and teaching.
From that place of rest and renewal, we find ourselves better equipped to face life’s demands and respond with love and wisdom.
Sister is a gentle call to remember what matters most; choosing the better part.
