Graham says: ‘The line in Rest for My Soul which has attracted most comment so far, perhaps unsurprisingly, is the one about poisoned springs. In our age of screens and digital devices – amazing for communication and information yet often programmed to monetise and manipulate our appetites and fears, it may never have been so easy to ‘fill our cup’ from them.
Into the anxiety, distraction and addiction, Jesus’ invitation speaks lovingly and urgently; ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ (Matt 11.28).
Those who first heard this invitation knew he wasn’t offering a quick fix; it was a costly call to follow him and learn to live as he lived, to become like him.
It is the same today – our destructive habits must be superseded by Christ-like ones, hence the prayer of this song, ‘O Jesus, above all, be the habit of my soul’. Habits are formed by repetition, through trying, failing, getting up and trying again, in the routines of everyday life, hence;
‘I’m taking time, I’m making room
An altar in my heart, my home
…I’m slowing to your walking pace
the gentle rhythms of your grace’.
The song is a prayer which helps me to renew my commitment to the habits which help me to stay close to Jesus, and I hope others find it useful too.’
