Good News was written as part of The Gift; a Christmas collection designed not just as an album of songs, but as a complete event. The idea was to create something that could be performed anywhere, in a church hall, out in the open air, even in a shopping mall, drawing people in and sharing the heart of the Christmas message.
This song is one of the announcements in that event. It captures the excitement and energy of the angels’ proclamation to the shepherds:
“Good news, good news to all we bring,
Hallelujah! News of great joy that angels sing.”
It’s deliberately fun, simple, and involving, a song meant for everyone to join in. I wanted it to carry that same spirit of welcome the angels brought, that this message really is for all people.
One special feature of Good News is that it was written as part of a medley within The Gift. It flows naturally into Sing All the Earth, and from there into the familiar Gloria (Hosanna in Excelsis). Each song can stand on its own, but together they form a joyful sequence, a kind of musical journey from announcement to celebration to worship.
That flow from the angels’ “good news” to the whole earth singing “glory” captures what Christmas is about. It begins with a message in the night sky and ends with the whole creation rejoicing.
So whether sung in a church, a school, or a busy shopping centre, Good News still carries that same invitation today:
Come and hear; the Saviour has come!
